Day 6 - San Ignacio

GREG: Today we spent most of our time walking around San Ignacio, seeing the town and planning out our time here. Lisa did some yoga on our huge, breezy deck this afternoon (she's hoping to take a class Thursday morning), and we also squeezed in a visit to Cehal Pech, a small Mayan site up the mountain from San Ignacio (a pretty rigorous workout since it was about 90 degrees and mid-day and the incline was steep.) We're going birdwatching tomorrow morning at 5 a.m. with a professional birder, but we saw a few on our own today.

LISA: As Greg mentioned we saw some birds today. One was a cool woodpecker--I'm not sure what kind -- and right after we saw a pileated woodpecker. It was so amazing! It was pretty close to us so we could get a really good look at it for several minutes (sorry we weren't able to get a picture). Its crest was really big and red. Have you ever seen one of these, Mary Carol? We also saw a hummingbird and the coolest thing was that it was perched on a branch for a long time. Neither of us had ever seen one that wasn't flapping its wings. Also, we saw a bird we still haven't identified. It was black with a colorful breast and a long thick bill like a toucan. All of these within a ten minute span. We are both really excited about tomorrow's bird walk.

LISA AND GREG: Last, after dinner (great Belizean rice and beans, which is red beans with coconut shavings in the rice) we found wedding bands to replace the temporary ones we bought in North Carolina. For those of you who don't know, instead of rings we decided to get wedding "wrist bands" but for the wedding we had to get some stand-ins. Now we have the real thing.

That's it for now. Here are some photos from today, including some of the beautiful flowers we've seen.

Happy Birthday, Mom!!
