Day 1 - Chicago to Merida

GREG: We made it to Merida on schedule with a stop to change planes in Mexico City. All went well on the flights except for what sounded like a toolbox full of hardware spilling and rolling (loudly) to the back of the plane about 3 minutes after take-off. Kind of scary but the plane didn't fall apart and we landed with no problems.

This is the hotel we're staying in for the first two days -- Hotel Medio Mundo, which is about 4 blocks from the main plaza in Merida. It has a beautiful courtyard but I couldn't get any good shots of it today.

Here's Lisa in our room -- we like it. And the AC works well, which is a good thing because Merida gets very hot and humid this time of year (though tonight it felt great outside).

We arrived at about 4 pm and it poured for about an hour after that (this is the rainy season -- showers almost every afternoon, but sunny most of the day), so we really didn't get to see too much yet. We ate dinner at this place, La Casa de Frida -- food was great. That's my Crocodile Dundee outfit.

Here's Lisa eating Cuitlacoche, which I'll let her describe tomorrow (she's sleeping). But as you can tell from the look on her face, it was really good.

More to come tomorrow.

LISA: It's morning now, this is Lisa. We had a great, restful night. Cutlacoche is fungus that grows on corn. I know it sounds gross but it is delicious and it's considered a Mexican delicacy. It tastes kind of like portabello mushrooms. As Miguel would say, Yummy!

Some of you are asking if you could add comments to our blog posts. That would be cool! We hadn't mentioned it because we didn't want people to feel pressured but if you're feeling like you'd like to share some of your thoughts we would love to read them. Please send either Greg or me an email and we will send you an invitation if you think you'd like to. We probably wont be able to reply individually but we will definitely read them all. Greg and I are off to eat an awesome breakfast and explore the city by foot. Talk to you later.
